i am really torn about this issue

On the one hand i agree with you because people do look up to model and if they are too skinny they are not only putting their own lives in jeopardy, but the lives of others as well

However, as someone who loooooves fashion and the fashion industry i tend to lean to the other hand. Try to think of places where clothes look the best- in the store on the hanger right? well essentially what these models are doing is acting as beautiful human hangers. They have thin, little boobless bodies that dont interfere with the way the designers want the clothing to hang. Fashion is about the clothes-first and foremost and as a designer whatever you have to do to show the clothes in the best light you are going to do, even if that means hiring emaciated models.

In addition, most of the women who go into modeling know what they are in for, they arent retarded. They know they will have to stay lean and will do what it takes to stay that way. I should also point out that it isnt the models responsibility to watch your kids and make sure they dont throw up after they eat. If they wanted to be parents they would quite modeling and go get knocked up.

Catwalk models are supposed to be super skinny because their bodies are supposed to be like walking clothes hangers to show off the clothes they're modeling. It's the whole point of a fashion show.

However, all other famous women are pretty much too skinny, TV celebrities in person look grossly anorexic. I do think magazine models and movie and TV actresses should look more like the average woman, size 10 or 12 would be awesome. But those Dove ads with "normal" women, all people do is look at those women's faults, so I guess it's a long hard road but at least our society is slowly getting there....

Except for Twiggy, the models of the past were skinny but never wafer thin like many are now. Not even the supermodels of the 80's. No one complained about Cindy, Elle, Naomi, Linda, Kristy etc being too thin because they weren't! They represented a slim but very healthy look. Even Kate Moss who is very thin never looked sickly like some of the models today. So the excuse of they need to be super thin to wear the clothes is crap! I understand the need for some kind of uniformity in the industry so that designers have a similar format to work with. I understand weight and height are important to add to the look of the garment but do they really need to look like they are on deaths door! There is a difference between healthy thin and sickly thin. Using models this size says to me that the people who hire them don't care about the models as people, they are just objects to be used.

If some nameless model is a bigger influence on your child's life than you are, shame on you!

Why does no one complain about all the FAT role models out there, when obesity is 100,000 times worse a problem in society???

Secondly, let the market work - of people want to se heavier models, and that will help sell clothes, people would be using them.

It would be like telling pro sports that they can't hire anyone over 250 pounds, because it makes young boys use steroids!

The modeling industry does have plus size models. The ones who are really skinny I believe need to eat because if they don't then that means they aren't taking care of themselves. There are some industries out there that do want models who are a coat hanger, but there are also ones that give everyone a chance.

yes they should be more real.. its not fair to women have to listen to guys talk about these beautiful girls who arent real. their rich, usually famous, they have people do their hair and makeup professionally almost every day, and they have people they hired that tell them what to eat and what not to, and what exercises to do.. also they are airbrushed in magazines.
