I don't find ambition ugly. I think ambition (unless you're Julius Caesar), and competitiveness can be good qualities. I think taking advantage of an opportunity is positive, too. What I find ugly is when a person ignores consequences for others or hurts others for personal gain. A person can be ambitious and competitive but still show respect for those around them.

Ambition, competitiveness and grabbing opportunities whenever you can are not ugly. Everybody needs a bit of that attitude, otherwise we become laid back and lazy.
It becomes ugly when it takes over your life and becomes your driving force. When nothing else matters but winning and you crush friends and colleagues, abandon family and loved ones, all just so you can get a little higher on the food chain and beat the Jones with your multi-million dollar bejewelled stick. That's when it gets ugly and seriously wrong.
If you are liable to this, please, I beg you, take a step back and see why you're doing it. And let me tell you, you'll be chasing something you'll never really get in the end and you'll be running farther away from you to become a mean winning machine.
