My girlfriends have always compared themselves with me. I have lost a few friendship because they have been jealous of me. I think it stinks i hate it a lot. The curse of comparison.
I never compare my friends to my life that is what should make us love each other and celebrate the fact that we are different.

I have one friend who is obsessed with being skinnier than me and always has, though i didn't know it until recently. I used to be really skinny, and she was always skinnier, when we went out to lunch she would wait until i ordered, and then order something always lighter than me. Later, i had a baby, and inevitable gained a few pounds, and then she confessed that she had been anorexic for a while, and that she was finally recovering, etc. I asked her why she was anorexic at all, she's always so much skinnier than me.. and she said "because i have to look better than you!" that was a shocker, and even now if we run into each other, i can tell she's checking me out making sure she looks better. let's just say she's not so much a best friend anymore...

I think that it is just in our nature to compare. It is not always a bad thing, it can motivate us to attain what we want. We can see that it is possible and that we could do that too. It also helps us set our moral compass. Would I put up with that? Could I do that? She has that but is she better than me? Did that make her happy, would it make me any happier? Does that really matter in the long run?

i think that is human to compare ourselves to others and even if we're friends there is still this need to be at level with what is around us and nowadays everything is being compared even things that shouldn't be.
so it's not really the subject what is important is that those feelings should not be so negative that they lead to silly behaviors or to disloyalty.

We don't do it in secret. We're best friends, we tell each other everything, even about each other. We've been friends for over 20 years, we've earned the honesty.

Yes, that happened to me, but she wasn't being secret about it. We are not friends anymore because it got to be too weird.
