Unstable atoms are radioactive, they are emitting electrons, energy, neutrons, protons ect to try and get themselves stable. These atoms can still react and make bonds but are usually dangerous. The advantages of having an atom in a stable state is that it will not emit things (protons electrons ect) which is harmful to the human body not to mention the environment. Also the atom is not as reactive. Where as a stable atom has to be given energy (or put in an environment where it can have kinetic energy) to react, a radioactive atom can react on its own.

Also atoms are classified as stable and unstable depending on the number of electrons and neutrons. There are certain combinations that work, while others don't. In electrons we can see the pattern but for neutrons its a little more difficult to understand.
