The density of population in any area depends on various factors - most of the common factors are the easy availability of water, food and pleasant climate. For example, generally river deltas are densely populated because the land is fertile, the water is easily available and climate is generally conducive. Conversely, areas like deserts and extremely cold areas are thinly populated because these areas do not support life as easily.

The Demographics professor broke down population changes by 4 variables.
1. People are born.
2. Peoples die.
3. People move in.
4. People move away.
So taking an area you want to study, you can summarize birthrates, and immigration against death rates and emmigration. Wars and diseases have historically skewed the death rates, and displaced population because of wars (see Darfur 2006-07) creating more potential for disease.

If the requirements of life - water, food, work & society are in abundance folk will want to live there.
Communities form usualy for a reason, a river crossing, a port a convenient place for a market etc.
Only two cities I know of were set up purely for political purposes - Brazilia and Canbara

there may be more jobs available.. the location is better to live in. for example, cities are densely populated because of better chances for jobs and the population grew as more people moved to urban areas. also, the land may be rich. ancient civilizations had people who settled nearby rivers because the surrounding land was fertile. additionally, rivers were useful for transportation.

Because more people live there.
Ipso facto it is LESS dense, where less people live.
Get the idea?
Perhaps it WOULD be a nice idea if we were all equally spaced out around the whole world though. We wouldn't live QUITE so close to noisy idiot neighbours.

Sometimes it has to do with religion. Sometimes it has to do with how rich a certain population is (don't ask me why). And sometimes it has to do with technology, but I think mostly it has to do with education.
