fishing for catfish?

when fishing for catfish,do you bottom fish or do you use a bobber

Traditionally, cats're bottom feeders, so I use a Carolina type rig with a sliding sinker.
Bobber fish for cats if they're known to be hitting big mid water baits, like live minnows, crayfish, etc. Mostly more energetic types like channel cats and maybe blues go for the bait suspended. Also check out using syringe-inflated nightcrawlers- this technique floats your worm just above the muck on the bottom-works great in certain areas.

I used to go to the store, get the most grisly piece of beef liver I could find. About a $1 or so worth of meat. I'd cut it into long tailed, triange shaped slices. Then tie a leader to your line with a sinker. Hook the meat on your hook and toss. It goes to the bottom where most catfish feed.

Another good trick.......want to chum the water a little? This works!!

Get a big coffee can. Mix salt water with some catfood that you left out overnight. Put it in the can, punch some holes in it. Attach a rope to the can. Toss it wherever you want to fish for catfish. It will draw them in big time!
