I'm 19 and I have phimosis. I can't really go see a doctor for various reasons (one of them being that I'm too embarrased about it), so what can I do on my own to cure it? I've read about prescription cremes but is there anything I can get over the counter? Or anything else that will help cure phimosis?

Oh and if you're going to say circumcision, don't bother posting because I'll just ignore it...

Also, how long should I expect it to take?

Medical opinion differs on the condition and on treatment. It has been suggested that any radical or surgical treatments for phimosis should not be done until after puberty. This has partly come about because of the reaction to the over use of circumcision as a mainstream treatment for phimosis. It has also been reported by bodies such as CIRP that significant numbers of doctors are unable to recognise normal developmental tight prepuce and pathological phimosis. It is believed that many unnecessary circumcisions are performed because of current medical practice and misdiagnosis of phimosis. Balanitis xeroticia obliterans has been sited as one of the only causes of phimosis that should lead to a surgical circumcision.

Treatment of Phimosis

If treatment is required there are three main types:

1. Tropical creams, steroidal and non steroidal, applied to the prepuce.

2. Gradual stretching of the opening of the prepuce to widen it.

3. Surgical reshaping of the prepuce to make it wider.

All these treatments tend to avoid the side effects associated with surgical circumcision, trauma, pain, side effects of removal of the foreskin such as friction and interference of the erogenous and sexual functions.

Phimosis or preputial stenosis as it is more accurately called can be caused by chemical irritants such as properties found in many bubble baths or even certain soaps.
Only about 2% of the cases require circumcision the rest can be cured by non surgical treatment. In about 50% of the cases, a topical steroid will work. If you're embarrassed to mention the problem to your pharmacist, tell him you need something to help with the discomfort of a spider bite. He will give you a cortico steroid cream which may help.
If you have a family member that has a prescription for a cream that is used to treat psoriasis or eczema that would be better.
You might also want to try to ease the foreskin back gradually over a period of a week. This procedure can be a little painful and when a medical practitioner does it, he will use a local anaesthetic before.
I sure hope this clears up with the home remedies but if not, then a trip to the doctor's office might be in order. If it persists, there may be a time where the discomfort overcomes the embarrassment.
Good luck, I feel for you.

There are many ways to remedy phimosis. The first thing you can try are "stretching exercises" as these work in most guys with mild phimosis (and you don't need to see the doctor for this).

In one stretching exercise, take two fingers and stretching the foreskin opening as far as it'll go comfortably (like increasing its radius) by hooking a finger on either side of the opening. It's kind of like you're stretching the opening in two different directions and you just hold it there for a few seconds then let it relax and repeat the process over. It's best to do this after a shower/bath and it should be done for a few minutes each day for several weeks to a month.

If this doesn't work after a month, then you should see a doctor about prescription creams that're supposed to help. According to one study, the creams are actually the most cost-effective of all treatments that a doctor can give, especially if you couple the creams with the stretching exercise.

If after yet another month and there's no improvement (which is very unlikely), you might want to consider surgical intervention. This doesn't necessarily mean circumcision, as there are other less invasive procedures with a quicker recovery time. See the links for more info.

I am intrigued by the term "cure". What exactly are you trying to "cure"? I seriously doubt you have phimosis. It is an extremely rare condition, and the term is generally used incorrectly to describe a tight foreskin. In which case, there is certainly nothing you need to "cure". Stretching and other torturous methods you describe, and others have mentioned also, are totally unneccessary. What you most likely have is a perfectly normal and perfectly formed penis. That fact that the foreskin is tight is not a problem and does not need any of the ridiculous suggestions (including your own) to remedy an imagined situation. The penis and foreskin work together in almost all men - each being unique and specifically designed for the individual owner. You cannot go around comparing yourself to anyone else and expect to find exactly the same penis and foreskin as yours anywhere. Nor should you compare yours to anybody else and expect that their is right and yours is somewho wrong. You have been misinformed about your foreskin and this has caused you some needless concern. I hope that you will now try to learn more about the wonderful thing your fully functional penis is, how to care for it and how to use it properly. Whatever you do, do not ever submit to the cruel and barbaric procedure of circumcision which is already outlawed in the most progressive countries of the world.

Phimosis Cream Over The Counter

Did you see a doctor? The only way to temporarily cure this, is to clean whatever bacteria is in between the folds of skin. It is very, very painfull and you may still need medication. You don't have to be circumsized, but you need to be a little more careful. Phimosis occurs when bacteria gets in the folds of the foreskin and is not properly removed with normal washing. Many men are not circumsized and live much of their life never having this condition, you should pay a little more attention to this area specifically each day when you are in the shower. I don't mean to sounds as though I am blaming you, a lot of people are not well educated when it comes to matters like this one, but as long as you remove the bacteria that is there now and pay close attention to keeping this area clean, it should not continue to happen. Good Luck!

If you don't want to see the doctor......STRETCHING TECHNIQUE ONE
If the foreskin is very tight, the simplest method is to pull back on the skin (easiest with an erection) so that the opening feels tight without real pain. Hold that for a few minutes and repeat a few times. Do this a couple of times a day(use cream). Soaking in a warm bath will make the skin easier to stretch. If the opening becomes sore, or develops splits, stop and let things heal up. Going at it too fast will only slow things down in the end.
Once the opening is big enough to just fit over the rim of the glans when erect, the foreskin is at risk of getting stuck behind it. If this happens paraphimosis may develop. Stretching technique two avoids this risk.

PARAPHIMOSIS
Paraphimosis occurs when the foreskin gets stuck behind the glans of an erect penis, trapping the blood that causes the erection in the glans and causing swelling of the foreskin itself. If the foreskin becomes stuck, squeeze the head of the penis firmly to force the blood out and try and ease the foreskin forward. Do this by gripping the skin either side just below the tight part and then try to pull it forward. If it’s gone back it should be possible to get it forward again. Like stretching this may be easier in a warm bath. If after many tries you still can’t do this see a doctor or ER fast. This is uncommon but you should be warned.

STRETCHING TECHNIQUE TWO
You can either grab each side of the foreskin opening (with the foreskin forward) and gently pull on each side of the opening or, even better, insert the ends of two fingers, even the little fingers and pull them gently apart. Stretch the opening in this way until it feels uncomfortably stretched but not actually painful. Hold and repeat as for method one. Once again this is best done after soaking in a warm bath.

SENSITIVITY
As you stretch and are able to expose more of the glans you may find that it is very sensitive or even painful to touch. You will find it less painful the more you expose and use it and gradually the over-sensitivity will lessen. A gentle way to start touching the head is by using the shower spray. Also you should use lube when touching the head directly.

If it's not that bad, you can manually stretch it out when you shower just for a minute or two. That'll take a few weeks to see results but they're well worth it. I did it and now it's perfect.
