I find that it opens sometimes for no apparent reason and it doesn't open and just goes straight to the printer. This annoys me because I sometimes only want to print a couple of the pages in the document. Is there anything I can do to make the dialogue box pop up everytime?

Instead of printing by clicking on the print icon try printing this way: Click file-->Click print--> Now your print control window should open rather than directly printing without any options.

If you want to try it without wasting paper then turn your printer off and test the method. If it doesn't work, then double click on the printer in the taskbar and cancel the print.

I have a feeling it should work like a champ for you.

Have you noticed how you start the printing?
Usually, it should always pop up. Unfortunately, Microsoft thought that it is too confusing for a user who only wants to get his document quick to the printer. So when you are printing from MS Office by hitting the Print icon on the bar, it doesn't pop up. To make it appear, you have to print by choosing (in the menu bar) File -> Print. Then it is shown and you can change the print job's properties.

Instead of PRINT button on toolbar, use the command in menu File -> Print.
