It depends what's officially recognised, and whether you count territories and countries that form part of one larger recognised country (e.g.: United Kindgom, Australia, Russia, etc.) separately.

For example, 193 countries arises from many reports, based on the USA's recognition of sovereign states. But that doesn't take into account countries like Scotland, Wales, or the Faroe Islands (to name a very few) - which many sports and other bodies recognise as separate competing nations - or "unrecognised" countries like Taiwan.

Wikipedia also offers a good argument for 193, with caveats, and an overall international territory answer of 245. There are 192 members of the United Nations and FIFA has 204 "member associations". From what I can gather, there were "more than 190" countries competing in the last Summer Olympics, although there are 202 registered National Olympic Committees ...

... and the truth lies somewhere in the middle of all that.

there are a lot of countries out there, but for the world cup, only 32 countries qualify
