For example, I saw an ad for a teacher at a baptist school where they said all applicants must be christian. I'm pretty sure that if that was a public school, or other type job, that it would be illegal. Just wanted to know if the same rule applied to a private school.

It’s legal.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of l964 includes this exemption:

“...it shall not be an unlawful employment practice for a school, college, university, or other educational institution or institution of learning to hire and employ employees of a particular religion if such school, college, university, or other educational institution or institution of learning is, in whole or in substantial part, owned, supported, controlled, or managed by a particular religion or by a particular religious corporation, association, or society, or if the curriculum of such school, college, university, or other educational institution or institution of learning is directed toward the propagation of a particular religion.”

Well, for a public school, yes it is illegal for them to demand that you be a certain religion. If it is a baptist school though, it probably isn't public. Just like hooters can only hire hot big breasted women as waitresses, certain businesses can do selective hiring.

in this case, the law would not protect you. why would you want to work somewhere like that if you do not fit the criteria? there are many jobs available without strict rules about worship.
parochial school are private. you need to look at a public school.

Hobbit,

U.S., right?

I'm quite sure that even though it's a private school, imposing religious restrictions as described is in violation of the Civil Rights Act...therefore illegal.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of l964 prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals because of their religion in hiring, firing, and other terms and conditions of employment. Title VII covers employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations, as well as to the federal government.

EDITED LATER...

Very well kp...I stand duly corrected. Thanks for the info.
