Go to the Ho Chi Minh mausaleum and see his embalmed body.
Go to the Ho Chi Minh mueseum and see his life story on display.
Visit the 1 pillar pagoda. (Right near the mueseum and mausaleum)
Take an overnight, or even 2 night cruise on Halong Bay.
Wander around the old quarter, sampling the food and bia hoi.
Visit the temple of literature.
To be honest, 4 days is probably more than you really need to see all of Hanoi city. You can easily do the mausaleum, mueseums and one pillar pagoda in one day if you start early enough.

You will drink Bia Hoi, Eat the greatest Food, visit with the nicest People and have great time. Beautiful sites to visit and so many great things to do. I will be there in June again and I always see new and great things. Buy the latest copy of the Rough Guide; since you haven't been there before. Enjoy your time there. Cheers.
