The original name of the capital of India is Dilli. Delhi's origin is attributed to the legend of Raja (king) Dillu who is believed to have founded his capital in the 10th. century, thus the name Dilli.

Delhi was the capital of eight successive reigns each of which gave it it a new name:

1. Lalkot: built by the Tomar king Anangpal in 1060 AD
2. Siri: established by Allaudin Khilji in the 14th. century
3. Tughlakabad: founded by Ghiyas-ud-din-Tughlak
4. Jahanpanah: founded by Muhammad-bin-Thuglak
5. Ferozabad: built by Emperor Feroz Shah in the 14th. century
6. Purana Quila: the walled city founded by Emperor Humayun and enlarged by Sher Shah
7. Shahjahanabad: Walled city founded by Emperor Shah Jehan in the 17th. century
8. Contemporary Delhi: came into political and govt. focus when the Imperial Capital was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi by the british colonisers. Sir Edward Lutyens and Sir Herbert Becker planned the "Imperial city quarters" and constructed important government buildings there. The first phase of this construction was completed in 1937. This portion of Delhi is referred to as New Delhi as opposed to pre-colonial "Old Delhi".
