I believe it to be a catfish of some sort, but have had no luck identifying it on the web. It was sold to me as a "Blue Whale" and I was told it would grow to be no bigger than 3 inches. Well, its 56 years later and about 6 inches long. Would like to identify so I can create a natural invironment in it's new 100gl. tank (to get him out of his now 40gl. home) Thanks

Yes, post a link as an edit to this question. Someone should be able to help.

EDIT: Maybe I can save you the photo - is this your fish: http://www.thejump.net/id/whale-catfish.htm

or this one:
http://badmanstropicalfish.com/stats/misc_stats/stats_misc1e.html , http://www.aquariacentral.com/species/db.cgi?db=fresh&uid=default&ID=0536&view_records=1 ? It's a relative of the elephant nose fish.

In all fairness, Tierra had the "the jump" link up by the time mine posted!

I saw these once in a fish store about 50 miles from me - they also had some important info posted - which your fish store may not have told you - these fish will parasitize other fish in your tank. Here's a supporting article: http://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/cetopsis_coecutiens.htm

ADDITION: Try photobucket (http://photobucket.com/ ) - I've seen a lot of others here use it.

ADDITION #2: Maybe a blue (red/tail) botia? http://www.loaches.com/species-index/yasuhikotakia-modesta - (10" maximum size)

ADDITION #3: I hope you didn't get a blue channel catfish - you'll think you got a whale by the time it's finished growing! http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Catfish,%20Channel.htm , http://centralpets.com/critter_images/fish/freshwater_fish/FWF_0004487_20030220142539.jpg

Hey, need to get some sleep! I'll check back tomorrow to see if you got photos or an answer!

If it was sold to you as a blue whale or baby whale then what copper posted is what it should be. Baby whales don't grow more than 3 inches long. It sounds to me like a mix up at the fish store, like there was a baby whale and something else in the same tank and you got the something else but were told it was a baby whale. Try posting a picture on photobucket and I'm sure someone will know what it really is.

Wow! You've had it for 56 years? What do you feed it? Surely after all this time you know more about it than this?

Is this what it looks like? This page says they "only" get to be a foot long!

http://www.photobucket.com is a place you can upload pictures to.
