I have used him before with no problems but when I looked the cuts are all jagged, he's letting his helper cut the flag stones, I need to speak to him today but worried he's going to make excuses - I mean it should be possible to cut these in a straight line shouldn't it? The job so far looks dreadful along the edge where they should all finish in a straight line.

It doesn't matter who's cutting them , ultimately the builder is responsible and he'l have to put it right , or dont pay !!

You are the boss, everyone is working for you because you are the one paying the bill. if you don't like it tell him immediately. Tell him what you want and don't accept garbage just because you don't want to make waves. You'll have to live with it for a long time, the contractor will only see it for a little while.

I agree with the previous answers; you are paying good money for him (and all the workers he supervises) to do the job right. Speak to him as soon as you can and refuse to pay until the problem is corrected.

When was the last time you cut a stone? It`s either horrable or perhaps you should have specified polished edge, no way to know unseen, get an opinion from the local building inspector

Just ask him nicely how he intends to finish the edging off and make out you didn't know that you were having an edge or border.
