when a hollywood movie is set in ancient france why do the actors speak in english with a british accent?

other hollywood movies which are set in spain or russia, they use english language with local accent which doesnt make sense. but movies set in france make even less sense because they speak english with a british accent

In more colonial times, the French people were still adapting to their independence from British rule. There was a long transition from a more english way of doing things to the culture that we now know. Many French people today speak in a "British" accent as opposed to a "French" accent. English is also widely spoken in France.

As for the accents in the ‘30s and ’40s, I actually have a pair of theories. First, many British actors fled to Hollywood in the ‘30s because their voices were very sturdy and the money replaced into more beneficial useful in Hollywood. also, many early sound actors got here from the Broadway level, and Broadway actors oftentimes tried to talk in what replaced into undemanding as a “mid-Atlantic” accent, ie. (like 1/2-way between London and massive apple), an accent that replaced into 1/2-British and 1/2 US Northeastern higher crust English, as with old wealthy households of the Northeast. I heard an appearing coach (a black guy) telling a reporter that that’s the shape his college nevertheless tries to coach to youthful vast apple actors.

Precisely, because they are showing French, Spanish or Russian characters. So if they were actually speaking in those languages they would do it fluently. So why at all put an accent? Tell them.
