I have been searching around the web for tips on permanent relocation to Amsterdam. Now I have found useful tips here and there but there is no one compendium of information that I have found yet. I was just wondering if someone who has done this or relocated to the Netherlands in general would help me by giving all the little details of the process, warnings etc. etc. If possible could someone also list the things that must be done to maintain citizenship so that I could stay. Thank you.

I also wondered if it would be easier to relocate to the UK and then go to Amsterdam, let me know if this sounds better. Or even plausible as I happen to be a "lower class" citizen.

It's fairly easy to relocate to the Netherlands and the Dutch are very welcoming of immigrants. It's also a good place to live if you don't speak Dutch because everyone there speaks English. You might really want to look into accommodation first however because it is actually virtually impossible to find a place to live since it's the most densely populated country in Europe. If you have that sorted, consider yourself lucky. The best place to look on immigration info is on the Dutch embassy website according. Different countries require different visas....since you didn't mention where you're moving from . Good luck.

It is easy to move and live okay if you have lots of money. Living space in The Netherlands is very limited, houses are small in comparison to those in the americas (and I include central and south america as well!).

Typically relocating would mean you would have to rent an expensive apartments. Amsterdam is very expensive, and rental houses in the private sector are difficult to grab and very expensive.

As for tolerance I must say that while it holds true to some extent, things have changed considerably in the past 5-8 years. Now there are clear signs that the Dutch are not as tolerant as they want to make believe -well, except for tolerating homosexual couples and soft drugs- This is rather unfortunate I must say.

Me and my partner are moving to The Netherlands in May, my partner is Dutch so that helps a lot. The links you have been given should serve you well. I cant recommend any other sites though as most of them are in Dutch. I can tell you though that i recently found out that if you are planning to stay indefinitely, then you MUST do an exam on Dutch Language and Culture within the first 5 years of your stay. I think its to do with fitting into society and keeping the language and culture as strong as it is in Holland.
