As a mum of 3 the best gift anyone can get is disposable nappies, wipes, bepanthen cream & baby bathing solution.
Why? Because we go through tonnes of them & its often difficult to get to a store for supplies in the first weeks & mum-to-be will love you for it. These items are also quite expensive as an ongoing expense so you will be helping out where it will be most needed.
But a really special gift that IS appreciated would be you giving homemade vouchers with redeemable chores on them. Some examples:
Evening of babysitting
2 loads of washing & drying
Family dinner cooked
Morning coffee at local Café
Vacumn the house
Manicure & Pedicure
Doing the grocery shopping
This allows you to be individual, creative & ultra helpful during a time when new mums are so exhausted. My girlfriend did this for me & it was so special, just what I needed.
I hope the baby shower goes well.. let us know what you decided to do!

Coming from a mother of two kids I think the best gift I ever got at my baby showers was the (womb bear). It's a soft teddy bear that you can put in the baby's crib and when you turn it on it makes a sound just like the mother's womb and it helps the baby relax because the baby is use to hearing that sound and it even turns off by it's self after 45min and it would be a great gift to go with the crib. I can say my daughter is now going on 2 this June and she still likes to have her womb bear on she sometimes even turns it on herself.
You can find these bears at most any store that sales baby stuff and they don't cost as much as the new born gifts and it's a gift that will help the mom and the baby both get some sleep.

An original idea?? Well, I'm sure that the baby will have PLENTY of gifts!!!! What about a special gift for the mother??
Sometimes, mothers feel lost as all people talk about is "the baby"!!! Maybe getting the mother a gift certificate for a massage & makeover would be a nice thing to do??

I would suggest a photo quilt, but I seriously doubt you have time to put one together, although they are simple to make.
What about a blanket with the baby's name embroidered on it? They can be ordered from a local store one day and picked up the next----if there's one where you live.
Oh, you say she doesn't have much. What about a BIG supply of disposable diapers and a beautiful basket filled with lotions, diaper ointment, baby wash, etc.
She's lucky to have good friends like you! :)

Shower her with a GiftCard from Wal-mart or a Local baby store in the area so that way she'll be able to pick out what she wants and then maybe you oth can go shopping together and help her pick out things for baby or herself.
people always love to make their own decisions and just throw things that she doesn't like to the side. so i would prefer getting a GiftCard than something i DON"T like wouldn't you.

Maybe instead of getting something for the baby, get her something to make HER feel good, like a gift certificate for a manicure or pedicure, She will love getting pampered especially at a time when some women feel the least attractive. Sometimes the mom deserves to be spoiled.

I always get a bunch of laundry stuff and put it in a laundry basket with maybe a teddy bear or something. Or a bunch of bath stuff in a baby tub with a couple of rubber duckies. I gave formula to one mother. Since I'm a mother myself I try to buy the things that I needed the most when my baby was born.

The best person to answer this question is the mother herself. At a time like this she and only she knows exactly what her little baby needs most. So don't be bashful , chalk up some courage and ask mum what she needs for her little one. You too will be quite proud of your addition to the little baby's exact need.

What about a nappy cake! I had one given to me. If you can imagine a wedding cake it is similar onle made out of nappies. You roll the newborn nappies up, then on both ends so it stays tight. keep putting them together to form a circle filled. then do another layer. Do 3 or 4 layers them put a little toy on the top. soooo cute.

I also am having a girl and i had my baby shower last week. My mum got a beautiful silver bangle from the jewlers. (around $30 AU) It is the smallest and cutest bangle i have ever seen. That was my favorite gift as it has meaning (coming from my mum) and she can keep this for her daughter one day.
Hope this helps!!
