I think Artest is one of the best defenders in the NBA. He can guard 1-4. He is quick enough to stay with a PG and strong enough to defend a PF. I think Battier and Posey has less versatility then Artest. Where Artest's defense suffers is when he fancies himself as an offensive player. Usually Battier and Posey is on the floor to defend. They don't initiate any plays, but only catch and shoot. If you see their stats, they take way more 3s meaning they plant themselves in one spot in offensive end. Artest, on the other hand, expends a lot of energy on the offensive end. Also, Artest has to overextend himself because his teammates are horrible defenders.

artest isnt an overrated defender. the guys you mentioned are merely good defenders but not great. artest has the strength to match up with almost anybody on the court, plus he literally loves to play defense which is crucial if you are going to be committed to being a great defender. as an all around player artest is overrated though because offensively he holds the ball too much and isnt a good shooter or passer.

Well I think that Ron Artest is a quite good defender but is quite overated at sometimes.....I would think that Shane Battier is a better defender than james posey and what about Shawn Marion he can steal/ block etc allround player! i would rank them: 1. Marion 2. Artest. 3. Battier....don't think posey is good enough to in this mix.

Ron Artest has lightning fast hands. He is one the better defenders I've seen in 30+ years of watching NBA basketball.

As a person, one must wonder just what goes on in his mind.
I mean, here is a guy with all the talent in the World. He is financially secure for the rest of his life. Yet, it seems that, somehow, his priorities aren't right? He seems to have a propensity towards violence. And, he has put himself above his team at times.

I understand that, maybe, someone has higher aspirations than NBA basketball (music? *coughs*), but if you can't commit yourself the way your team should rightfully expect you to, what does that say? If even one time you put other things (career wise) ahead of a contract that pays you tens of millions of dollars to PLAY A GAME, why should anyone take you on your word unless that other deal was pretty much a guarantee to enhance your already ridiculous wealth?

The proof is in the pudding. Artest, on the court, is a defensive dynamo. In decision making, he has repeatedly shown a complete lack of respect, maturity and wisdom.

overrated defender? no.
overrated player? yes.

Artest is a good defender, thats been proven. he's physical and plays on the ball well. he also reads passing lanes (led the league in steals at one point).

personally though, i'd take Tayshaun Prince or Shane Battier as defenders over him.

He is definitely not overrated. He is a great defender with good hands (steals) and usually his opponents will force to shoot bad shots. He does play a little weird in offense though. Maybe he should really concentrate on defense only.

I have to say that since leaving the Pacers, his defensive tenacity has fallen to the wayside. He is not as good defensively as he was because I think he is taking too many shots in the Kings system. There are definitely better defensive players than him, namely Bowen, Battier and dare I say... Kobe. Please don't yell at me for that one, but the truth shall set you free. I don't like his personality, but you gotta give 24 his props. I feel like I just dragged myself through mud... Gotta go shower now!

I think he's an overrated defender. There are must better defenders in the NBA than him. There are better defenders in the western conference.
