the only option was 'pads', when i started we didnt even have the stick on, waterproof type, had to wear a belt that clipped the pad in place and then plastic pants over the top to stop leakage YUK!, not as bad as before that, my mum tells me they literally used rags which were boiled and reused, hence the term 'on the rag'.

The pads -- and before that there was "the rag" (effectively a bunched up dishcloth that you rinse out).

i have read of them using knitted baby socks as tampons, and wads of Cotton...i don't know how accurate that is though.
