a situation where when you take the train (ie. monorail, lrt) where you see pregnant women and old people standing with no place to sit. i come across this situation everyday, but yesterday was worst, when i was standing and this old lady got into the train and nobody bothered to offer her a seat. she could hardly stand, she was holding the iron bar with her 2 hands. it was so sad to see, and when you see the people sitting down, they have this 'dont care' look and they pretend to close their eyes. Until one girl got up to offer me a seat and i told her the old lady needs it more and i held the lady's hand and gave her my seat. why are these people so selfish. where are their courtesy for the older generation. and when people complain and say that the malaysians are unpolite they get all worked up, by right its the fact.

I would like to share my experience here.
I was taking public transport during my pregnancy and like you case, I ended up standing for the whole journey. Then one day I noticed a sign inside the trains and buses that there are 'special' seats allocated for thos who needed it more. So, every time i take public transport, I head to the allocated seat. Well, some people will automatically stand up and give you the seat while some took a while b4 giving up the seat to you. For those who pretended that they never see me (as though I was invisible), I will tell them nicely: I believe I need this seat more than you do.
WOW, they immediately stood up.

Try it! Cos even today when I take public transports and I noticed old folks standing, I will bring the old folks to the allocated seats and make the person stand up.

Baby N, you said -> Malaysia outside Malaysia isn't really great at anything. You are starting an indirect war in here unnecessarily. We are all talking about a small issue about human's behaviour (not only happening in Malaysia. It can happen in Singapore, Thailand or even Hong Kong). What makes you think the Malaysians are not watching enough news? What makes you think that they are not great at anything? I am upset to see such an irresponsible statement here so I have decided to ask you too --> What make you think you are great at everything?

Holyman, with comments like yours, no wonder why thebear asked the question on why you Malaysians live in denial. It is just so hard to point out certain issues to discuss and when you do, you often meet with puffing cobras who are just waiting to spit their venom at you.

That hurts! you should be more open to the worldly affairs and realise that Malaysians need to be more considerate about what others view about themselves. Maybe this is the result of your government's tv censorship board which never allow you people to learn about the truth behind the Malaysian news.

Malaysia outside Malaysia isn't really great at anything. Just the over expression of first time visitors who spent little days in the beach resort and getting their skin tanned. Most of the negative issues were avoided but never resolved (of course it is almost to resolve these kind of issue, but there is no progress at all, that surprises me!).

Anyway, as for the answer to the question, I suppose it is the typical mentality Malaysians have and unfortunately, not just few, but you can see it from a distance that these rude citizens are just so arrogant at times when it comes to civic mindedness.

Yes, & no.
I've come across in monorail in singapore .. where old ppl standing & young ppl doesn;t even bother given them seats.

Yet.. i agree some ppl not only applies to malaysian are very selfish even though we see ppl that are pregnant or old women standing ..

what we have to do to make our country a better place are be defensive to our culture & the same time dont do what other ppl comments to us..

i dont think malaysian ppl in this travel section community are doing what thebear asked or other askk..

by the way.. i'm proud to be malaysian.. (even other nationality is interested in us" heheh)

this is a moral issue. to solve it, lets take an example:

u know when malaysia first started its "visit malaysia year" slogan. it has this theme song, "smile". it goes like this:
smile~~~ smile~~ it isnt hard to do~~~
smile~~~ for a while~~~ let the world smile with u~~~
i say, this song brings some impacts on msians and our goodwill behaviour. but now the theme song is gone.

ok, now, what im trying to say is, if Dave,Teddybear, ImUrBiggestfan, n even Sarah keeps bringing up sad issues about msia, it does bring some bad impact on msians. hence, hatred is created.

if we just put aside this bad behaviour, and start praising n smiling, im sure we will have much more positive impact on others. remember, smile creates more smiles, but if u frown, u'll create more frowns.

moral issues cant be forced to be lectured by sarah, me, or any member. however, it can make us feel good if we have done something nice. so stop making a pinpointing mistakes or immoral issues, and start praising each other. ;-)

SMILE~~SMILE~~~~~~LET ONE SMILE MAKES TWO~~~

edit: but u are pointing out someone's mistakes, not yours. if u turn things around, and keep praising other ppls good behaviour, im sure u will love urself, and others too. and set a good example to those bad eggs.

edit: Baby N, i know we live in denial, but this is a moral issue. what do u suggest to improve it? at least i suggested to bring back the smile theme song. you are just complaining.

Dear I have a rare occasion to such a situation. I suggest to one and all that we should respect maximum a pregnant and elders. The former is going to give birth to our new generation. We should honour that most and the later completes this ining, who has completed the drama on this earth.
I wish I could bring this to all . Help elders and pregnants , whenever they require your help

i dont know.... but i guess each and every penny malaysian pay it seem a big sum of money to them... they pay for the fair and they deserve to have a seat. if your late it your fault. if your lucky you might get a seat. it "public" transport... they dont care who are you..

And maybe that's why they should avoid travelling in Malaysia.
