If you need a computer primarily for gaming go with the PC. You'll find they're really better designed for such activities. However, if your into photography, music, or video, and can afford it, I would HIGHLY reccomend the mac. They're A LOT faster and able to handle multiple large programs at once..........and oh ya, THEY NEVER CRASH!!!! I was a diehard PC user before I decided to buy a mac and I will NEVER go back (as far as my personal computer goes). Not only can my mac handle anything I throw at it almost flawlessly, but I bought my laptop over 3 years ago and it's still considered top of the line compared to modern PC laptops. Some of the features it came with (like bluetooth) were made to support technology that didn't even exist yet, but when the technology was finally released on the market, my computer instantly was able to function with it no upgrades necessary.

Windows Vista is great and the right choice for people who like to play video games especially those newly released ones. Don't be taunted that Macintosh Operating Systems are fast and all, and they have no viruses, they are just bragging too much. Back in the 90's Windows was way better than Macintosh because Macs were too slow than Windows. That's why many people gained trust in Windows. Besides you can't upgrade Macs. Windows Vista is much cheaper and has the same capabilities of a Mac. So even if there is a Mac using a Duo Core, there is also a Windows Vista using the same Duo Core. Have you ever seen on TV online games using a Mac? Apparently not, at least there is one thing good about Windows, you can play a wide variety of games online with other people. Macinstosh doesn't even have their own fun such as XBox 360 and prior. You can't play online with an XBox if you're using a Macintosh. Why buy an expenisve Mac when someday it will break and the cost of repairs are also too expensive. The only thing people are doing are just downloading music, editing videos, surfing the web, play online games, homework. Windows Vista has all that for you, so why waste a lot of money on a Mac?

I exclusively prefer windows machines. More programs are compatible, expecially games. I haven't tried Vista, which is what a new comp will come with, but my XP works very well.
It's true that windows machines are more open to viruses, mostly because more people write viruses to run on windows. There are programs out there that try to prevent this, and they usually do a good job.
Macs cannot be upgraded. Macs are not made by third party companies (which may be a good thing, up to you).
Desktop windows comps can have parts swapped out, and with a little know how you can even do it yourself without taking it to a specialty place.
Macs do a few things better, admittedly, like imaging and video editing, but in my opinion it's not enough compared to windows. Also, the Mac user I know actually runs windows on his computer and uses an Intel Core 2 processor.
For power and versatility at a good price, go desktop windows machine. Laptops are far more expensive, so only get one if you need it.
As a heavy gamer, programmer, and digital image designer I use my windows machine exclusively. It is argued that macs are more user friendly, and I can't deny that, but if you know much of anything about computers then you'll get windows just fine.
I also recommend getting a custom built machine from a company with reputable customer service - I used CyberPower and got a great computer, but when a piece of hardware died it took around four weeks to get it replaced, so I don't recommend them. Dell will charge more than they should for an equally powered machine, but they don't seem to break very often and I'm told their service is pretty good. Definately hunt around, there are a lot more choices to make for windows, but that's just another reason I think its better.
Enough to think about? I'm sure others have opinions to, and don't disregard them. This is just one guy's choice.

You were misinformed about Mac's being virusproof and faster.
Attractivenss is relative to the person viewing the product.
Your needs seem to simply be generic, and actually seem more based on your purchase of an MP3 player than a computer.
As long as you're not looking to want too much software in addition to what you've listed (especially games) either type of computer will suit your needs. If you're going to want more then don't get the Mac.
I don't know the answer to your sub-question about what othen than an iPod works on a Mac, going on their track record though probably not much.
Listing a link about security issues with Macs and a link to Alienware to show with enough money you too can own an incredibly sexy machine that probably costs way too much.
*PS: For the millionth time, Macs do NOT do illustration, video, and publishing better, that is one of the most overused "Hey here's a completely outdated piece of information I'm throwing out to make it look like I know something about this subject."... It's all about your skills and your software these days, I saw a person draw a photo realistic picture of a sports car in MSPAINT.

A PC hands down, in every angle based on your need Mac is certainly off the map and should be dismissed as a waste especially true if the game in question is the likes of Command & Conquer or some big shot, Vista may not offer any advantage over an XP setup at this time and foreseeable future.
There are always evengelist types who bestows you virtues of Mac, Linux, whatever, despite your need, although by experience this evengelism diminishes in an increase of technical skill and knowledge.
Here's some words to discourage you to get a Mac because I'm very firmly assured you will not be happy with one:
Don't get virus: partially true; Mac malware outnumbered PC's 5 to 1 in infection rate back in the 80s. Now since PCs are statistically outnumbering Macs about 99:1 no hackers give s**t about Macs since they are not statistically visible to brag about.
Speedy: true, as far as Motorola Palms outperforms Windows CEs back the day of using M68Ks comparing Microsoft OS; the access of any PIM apps in Palms almost one-finger affair to the multiple stylus taps needed in a Microsoft environment (still so for some programs). As raw computational speed goes the reverse is very true. Accessing any information that could be constute as needing immediate read needs no more than one mouse click on Mac OS X desktop but on Windows... raw speed Macs are inferior.
Compatibility of audio players on the Mac as far as I do know are generic MP3 players that functions as Flash drives on computer.

extra merchandising, a better merchandising team, basic layout, homogeneity. computing device is extremely any computing device no longer a mac, and of direction they're going to run the gamut in high quality/fee/layout. hence the only factor that Macs rather have over each and every computing device is they're able to run Apple proprietary application. there is likewise a picture factor that i'm noticing with Macs. using their branding and merchandising Macs are pointed out as "cooler" than their computing device counterpart especially subcultures. i'm considering the fact that a large style of you place down 'virus loose' as between the main important execs of a mac. That inspite of the incontrovertible fact that has to do with the Unix based working equipment run on the Mac extremely than the Mac itself. If computing device clientele are so prone, they are able to additionally get a plague loose working equipment in between the various Linux flavors.

well zach, let me add my 2 cents worth!
i'm a mac user and they are great computers. in my experience, everything just works. since apple designs both the hardware and the basic software everything is perfectly compatible. i'm not sure if you need any specialized programs for school, but that could affect your decision. macs aren't virus-proof. but they aren't harmed by windows viruses (99.999% of all viruses out there).
for your situation though, i think i'd lean towards a pc...not because it's better...but because price seems to be a major concern for you. (i know it would have been for me, at your age!)

I would suggest you get a PC.
The only people I know that use Macs are graphics designers and people that use media-related programs o_O
That might only apply to my country though.
