Purchase a 3.5"/5.25"/Universal Hard Disk Drive enclosure/compartment/case (manufacturers have lots of names for this thing) that has an IDE/SATA to USB/FireWire connection.. Place the HDD in the enclosure, attach the cable, install the drivers if any and you're all set to use your internal HDD as an external one..
You can also buy just the IDE to USB cable connector and a power adaptor for the HDD. You can attach the HDD to your laptop without the enclosure but it will be dangerous for your hardware to be exposed this way. But you will save money, 'cause the cables only cost 5 bucks.

You can place the hard drive into another computer as a slave drive and it will work. It does not matter that the hard drive is from 2002 and the computers 2005.
Unfortunately the only way to convert an internal HD to external is by using an external hard drive bay. You may be able to find one somewhere but they are normally sold with a hard drive already inside. Check used computer stores, thrift stores, flea markets you might get lucky.

Well those things are kind of rare. But to save time and money just open up the laptop and connect the two hard drives together. Its like adding a extra hard drive but you don't have enough room in the laptop. Instead of looking for an adapter that's hard to find, try opening the laptop up and connect.

It's easy. Get a USB case for a harddrive (basically, a USB disk without the disk) and plug it in. Something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817185010 should do the trick!
(Note: there were some disks that won't fit in that, such as "5.25in wide" disks, and some types of disk that won't work, like SCSI. These are rare, and by 2002 you'd only have one if you went out of your way to get one!)

The easiest and cheapest way is to put your hard drive in another pc and network your laptop to it and tranfer the files you want.
The fact that it is a 2002 HD does not matter as long as the pc can find and boot the drive

Mortis is correct. This was a big thing years ago. Not sure they still make the stuff now. But, as said, check around the used shops.

There are USB enclosures that you can mount your drive into. Just plug it in and access like any other USB device.

Haha, wow.. You're in the same predicament I'm in.
First of all, no.. Not possible.
Right now, I just put it all on my old computer and I'm gonna send it to myself using MSN.
8GB... Kinda a big transfer, but it doesn't bother me.
