What does it mean to be lacking in ambition ?

That's just a nice way of saying "lazy". Doesn't want to do anything special with their life, content to just work at a low paying job and live in a small home rather than work and go to college and strive for something better, or bigger, or a more exciting fulfilling life.

It really depends on who said it and to who.
If it's from a teacher, interviewer, lecturer...seniors...most promptly they see the person as lacking direction, living each day as it is. Lacking in drive to do what they think is good. But these are normally not accurate as we ourselves know what we are driven by.

If it's from a friend, usually just means they think we just want a normal life. Maybe they thought theirs was more exciting ? Depends really.

If it's from ourselves... perhaps we are already living a full life and just want company from our loved ones...or perhaps we just want to lay around doing nothing....or doing something without much meaning that doesn't relate to the future.

a catch 22 example: we want to be rich but we don't dare to be rich because we are poor now and not rich yet.

Lack of ambition?
Don't care about what people say, everyone is good at something. Note that some people just do what they are good at, without ambition and become rich. They might not aim to be rich (just a term as commonly, money is linked to ambition), but people might just say anyway that they are ambitious.

Not having any interest in doing anything-no goals, no drive to be involved in something that catches your interest-maybe depression is causing it.

Not everyone wants to set the world on fire and I'd rather have too little than too much-less stress but maybe for me that is a cop-out. I have accomplished much but I don't call it being ambitious. I just like to do things I enjoy or I feel God leads me to get involved in since He has a plan for each of His children. Getting motivated isn't always easy either.
