I heard a lady on NPR state: "My husband loves St. Patrick's Day because it is the only time he can cook corned beef & cabbage in my house." Are men actually living under these conditions or is it just window-dressing?

Depending on who you are with. Mostly though, it is the end of what YOU enjoy and the beginning of what YOU BOTH enjoy. A man's home is no longer his castle, as he is a mere resident like evey one else in the household, even if he pays all the bills.
It is of the utmost importance to be with someone you have alot of commonality with!
