This is a very important question, and not really one which can be treated with any depth in a forum like this.
Self knowledge is basically knowing what you would do in any given circumstance, and accepting the reality of that without judgement.
How to do this?
It requires a separation from the self, a looking at You from outside, as an observer, not a judge or accuser. Ask yourself what You would do under any given circumstance, and accept the answers you find. Do this enough and you'll become expert, and eventually Love Yourself, in the total acceptance of who you are. You may wish to change some things, but that's part of the journey of Life.
I assume you're a woman by your avatar. In that case remember that you are the image of the Goddess, and can do anything you set your mind to. You have a long journey in this Life, and many challenges to resolve, but if you couldn't handle it, you wouldn't have asked the question in thr first place. Blessed Be'

What does it mean to know who you are?
It means to know your identity, your true self, your purpose.
The steps to come to know yourself will need alot of thinking, searching and effort.
These are some of the things you can do:
1. In order to answer the question who am I? You will need a reference. For example, who am I in reference to this person I call my parents? I am their child. That's who I am, I am their child.
Ask yourself, who are you in reference to ?
Basic Reference: Parents, Lover, Home, Friends, Boss, Teacher, School, Local Church, State, Country, World.
Next, ask yourself, who could I possibly be in reference to ?
More References: the Poor, the Hungry, the Sick, the Sufferings, the Rejected, the Nobody, the Needy
Example: Who could I possibly be with reference to the Hungry? I'm might be their only hope, their bread, their food. I might be the air that they breathe. I might be the sole reason they could live. I could be their comforter. I could be the only person who feed them. I might be the only good they can see in this world.
2. Once you have identified who you are and what you could possible be, next you need to know what you can do in that ROLE of yours. What are my limits? How high can I climb that mountain, how far can I go just to give? How deep is my love for my family, my friends, my school, my country? How convicted am I towards the needy, the poor, the sick, the dying, the suffering?
Once you are done, you now have somewhat a solid idea of knowing yourself. At least now you know who you are and your capacity of being who you are. You also know what it takes to be who you are.
Of course, the quest to quench the thirst to know more about yourself doesn't end here.
In fact, it is only the beginning.....

That is the question of the ages. WHO AM I WHAT IS MY PURPOSE. I'm afraid it may never be answered. The best I can tell you is to find you're inner peace. Tell you what... Before you go to sleep ask a question to the cosmos. But be specific and request to be told in a way you will understand. Otherwise you will have some pretty weird dreams. And when you wake up in the morning the first thing on you're mind will be the answer you seek. Wright it down as it will dissipate. I did that very thing my self. I asked: I have this girl I like what can I do To get her to like me. The answer was practical screamed in my ear be you're self. So I am so far she's still talking to me. I stopped trying to impress ( was not working anyway) This really does work. Don't believe? Try a simple question at first. You will be amazed ( I know sounds like some stupid chain email) Guaranteed this will not cause bad luck LOL..... If you like send me an email and I can instruct you how to meditate to find you're inner self.

Think of it like looking at an actor on stage or screen. Can you know who they are by their performance? If you are a really astute observer of human behavior, or a well-educated psychologist, you might be able to get some insight into their personality. However, you can’t truly get to know them unless you meet them in person and have a really deep, honest conversation with them.
To truly know yourself, you have to have that kind of deep, honest dialogue with yourself. Peel away the layers of rationalization and self-talk that makes you comfortable about who you believe you are and get down to the core of what really makes you tick. When you know, understand, and accept what you feel and what makes you do the things you do, then you will know yourself.
It’s a great ride, and well-worth the trip.

We falsely assume that we are the body mind complex. It is imperative to know the Reality in YOU. While referring to us we always say 'I','I'. Let us know who this 'I' refers. Invariably people throughout the world use the word 'I' albeit in different languages. The real SELF in you is the 'I' principle. It is also known as 'Aham' or 'Iam' in different tongues. First of all know that the SELF, referred here is all pervasive. It exists always and everywhere. There is no place where it is not. It has no form or attributes. Whereas we falsely assume the impermanent body and the monkey mind as 'I' and reap endless troubles. The SELF is also is known as Pure Consciousness or LOVE. The SELF being a mere witness to the happenings of the world do not react or retaliate. It is unaffected by the happenings of the waking, dream and deep sleep stages of the world since it exists as a pure witness. nagarajan.

If we were able to truly look deep within our self search through the scattered pieces of our soul's which make up our daily lives. To grasp the understanding in belief, In which truth
opens and dissolves the mind... well honestly I doubt this question is even possible to answer
I hope this answer helps though.

Self-actualization. Being completely comfortable with yourself and accepting your life and who you are. It comes with age. So they say.. I'm 26, and I don't quite know who I am yet. Only time will tell.
