Convicts are one of the least picky fish you can get and are exeedingly easy to breed - so much so that the young can be very difficult to find a home for. They will live and breed readily in water with a PH of anywhere from 6 to 8, though 6.5 to 7.5 is more ideal. Temperature is tropical at about 78. Give them a cave and a tank of 20 gallons or more and make sure you have a valid pair and they'll produce for you.

Ave for most tropical fish is 78-80 degrees. Not over 85 or under 75 They will do fine. If you want them to breed you need to have some sort of cave they can easily defend they will lay their eggs inside there. I use to raise them (long time ago)

Which water conditions you should have depends on which cichlids you want to keep since their preferences differ greatly. For your first aquarium I recommend keeping species that are less sensitive to water conditions, and if you choose to try the species I recommend in this article you normally won't have to think about water conditions. I don't recommend keeping cichlids from the great African lakes as your first cichlids if you are an inexperienced aquarist, since they have more specialised demands.
