I'm on a quick change of shifts tonight. Meaning I work second then the next day I work first. For example I working 3-11pm on Tuesday and then on Wednesday I work 7am-3pm. I'm so wide awake because I'm used to working nights, but now I'm afraid I will be so tired and cranky tomorrow! How do I get to sleep!?

Ugh, that's sort of unfair of your employer to do that to you. I'm sorry to hear it; I'd be a total mess myself.

I guess I might take the first answerer's suggestion and pop a Benedryl. Or take some Nyquil.

Or, I sometimes use Claritin-D or it's generic counterparts (you have to get it at a pharmacy counter, they don't sell it on the shelves anymore) not to get to sleep -- it doesn't help with that -- but to be able to get up after a very short night's sleep of only 3 - 6 hours. For some reason when I take it I'm able to wake up really easy after a night of deficient sleep.

OK, I know NONE of my suggestions above include taking any of these medicines in the way they were intended to be taken. So I guess I sound a little shifty here. But, sometimes a sleep emergency is a sleep emergency.

Just don't become reliant on these measures if you can help it. These suggestions are meant to be short-term, one-night solutions only.

I agree with JKat - a glass of Cabernet with it doesn't hurt - you won't be driving
