my question is...when i take a close up picture of myself it turns out ugly as in ugly facial feature, but in real life i get compliments on my facial feature i am absolutely sure that these comments are not to make me feel good , they are random and from different people
so my question is : can you look ugly on camera and handsome/pretty in real life?
PS: do not say what is ugly what is pretty or beauty is in eye of beholder...

Interesting question! Yes I know what you are talking about, I was a model when I was very young, swim wear! I would hate how my pix would come out sometimes, didn't look like me at all, but when I was taking pictures out in the open women were calling me names, and just hated me! That is so funny, because I can look very good in some pictures and just ugly in some. In real life I make people break their neck and pull me over for my # almost always. Men have no respect even when I am with my husband. It doesn't make him feel good, so he takes it out on me and tells me I am ugly sometimes, but I know he gets very jealous, because I smile. I have been told my smile is breath taking, my husband calls it flirt! What ever, so yeah I don't trust pictures, look at Pamela Anderson, in real life she's a real sweet heart, but in person yikes, she is not pretty at all! I trust your word for it, you must be a good looking guy. I don't trust paper to tell me about a person how I should see them! It all depends on the photographer, paper quality, camera, scenery, daylight or nigh-time will show the effects of the moment, and could be good or bad! Modern technology helps make people look beautiful...We have our born natural good looking, and the unfortunate that need all that make up and air brushing out the skin, and with help of a camera that fixes all the imperfections of the skin...

A lot of it is because of the lighting and positioning of the camera. Certain angles and shadows can change your appearance or alter what you and others are used to seeing. Sometimes it may make you look 'better' and sometimes 'worse'. An example would be to find a picture you like of somebody's face, open it in an image viewing or editing program and mirror the image so that it switches directions. You will see that the picture you liked is mirrored, but it looks so different the other way.

I'm the same - I get compliements on the street and from random people but when I take a picture of myself it's completely different.

There are some people who are the complete opposite - they don't look that great off camera but when they get their picture taken, they look more attractive.

This is what they call being 'Photogenic' which means that they will always look attractive on camera even though in real life they may not be as attractive.

It's like an x-factor - if you have it, you got it and if you don't, tough luck.

Some people are just lucky.

Same problem here, I am told by so many I am beautiful in person, but my pictures always turn out horrible, my hair seems to stick out..my eyebrows tense, my nose crinkles I swear just at the moment the pictures are taken, some people have the misfortunes of being really unphotogenic..if you NEED good pictures for say a job or your own business website, I suggest you see a professional photographer who know how to work with lighting and angles to make you look your best.

I've heard this before. Here is the best answer I know of. Physiological when we look at face we only focus on one side of it. Then mentally reflect that image to see a whole face. Mentally seeing a symmetrical face. But really nobody has a symmetrical face. In a foto you see everything as a flat image. this makes any shadows or discolorations part of your facial symmetry. So in fotos you may not look different because the way you mentally absorb your image is different. This is a simple explanation of this concept. Ask a photographer or Psychologist for more.

Same thing with me. I think and other people have commented on it that I'm pretty in real life. But then when I take a picture I look horrible. Only when It is done by proffesionals do I look the least bit decent. I guess we just aren't photogenic. Sorry I know how it feels.

A picture is flat (2-D) while you are viewed in 3-D in real life. It may be that some of your features are flattened due to poor lighting in the pictures and result in unflattering looks. It may take some tricks to get pictures of you. For example, studio photographers would sometimes ask models to move their heads forward and pull shoulders back. This results in better pictures because the head and neck do not "disappear" into the body but would certainly look strange in real life.

Camera's use a higher intense light, thats why You're left with the spots after you take a picture. That instant you're left vulnerable.. Every flaw in your face is shown.

I would use a bit of foundation before taking a picture.. A shade or two darker than your normal skin pigment.

I know you're a dude, but It really works. I use that trick on my male models, who are at times, otherwise unattractive in camera posing.

Dude, you just have to find your pose. Some people act different when a camera is involved. They act different involentarily. Find some candid pics and you should see the real you coming out. And dont try to look good when taking the pic, just be yourself, the camera will capture what you have to offer. Plus a good photographer will work great too.

The camera could make you look worse on account of the lighting. I read/heard that if you take a picture of yourself with the camera upside down, it'll make any wrinkles you have less visible. This works because light doesn't cause shadows over wrinkles or anything. Try this at home!
