Even though you can use any brand of birth control pill to make it so that you only have a period 4 times a year the one that is touted specifically for that is Seasonale. It's been out since 2003.
And yes, sometimes a dr will recommend that a woman go without her period for a time if there are medical reasons for it which would mean having something like endometriosis (which I do have and I take the pill in the fashion so as not to have my period) or menstrual migraines.
The issue of whether or not a woman should skip her period at all is one that has been hotly debated among drs for almost as long as I've had endometriosis (10 years). Unfortunately it is an issue that will continue to be debated for some time to come.
I would check with your dr to see if it is a good choice for you to take Seasonale. Do you have medical reasons for why you are considering Seasonale?

Did you know that you could use almost any of the birth control pills on the market nowadays to give yourself lesser periods? Doctors won't recommend it, but you can do it. Before I started using NuvaRing, I was on a 28-day cycle pill. Instead of taking the fourth week's pills (placebo), I would start a new pack of pills. After the third pack, I would allow myself to "bleed" normally. Then, I would do it over again. Two years ago, when I went for my annual pap, I told my OB/GYN what I was doing. And asked her about a prescription for an extended -cycle pill. She informed me that, as of that date, the FDA had not approved the 84-day cycle pill for release in the USA yet. She then told me about the method of birth control I'm currently using, NuvaRing. I insert it, leave it in for three weeks, then replace it with a new one. I always replace the fourth week with starting a new ring. And, when I decide to have a period, I'll leave it out on the fourth week. But, the answer to your question is: Seasonique. Barr Pharmaceuticals, the parent company of Duramed Pharmaceuticals, released Seasonique to be available by prescription in July 2006.

Call your doctor and ask for it, it is on a prescription, so can't be purchased over the counter. Good idea. Best wishes
