is it? And what should I plan each year and such. I have only made a list of potential colleges and courses but I don't know what else I can do. And what should i do gradually each year.

I would really like to go to Carleton University and study Journalism and I have for a while. I've always loved writing. I was just wondering, though, what else I should plan throughout the years.

No, 12 is fine to start thinking about college...

with one important caveat.

Don't start making definite plans about how your life is going to go, what you are going to major in and at what school. I can almost guarantee that over the next 5 or 6 years, you will completely change your mind.

Up until the beginning of high school, try to experience as many things as you can and find a feel for what kind of things you like. Worry about your grades, but not too much. Colleges don't look back that far.

When you start high school, pay attention to your grades and pick a few activities that you are willing to commit to for four years. Colleges like to see that over a zillion activities that you hardly give any time to. Try to round yourself - pick something musical, something athletic, something academic. Colleges like "rounded" people.

When you start 10th grade, you can start visiting colleges. Also, start preparing for the SAT/ACT and think about taking that in the spring of 10th grade.

When you get to 11th grade, start thinking more heavily about what colleges you want to apply to, and visit more. Take the SAT again, as well as any SAT II subject tests that you feel you will be able to score fairly well in.

In 12th grade, start applying to schools. DO NOT slack off in the spring of your final year. Colleges DO notice this, and they won't like it.

Good luck!

Nope, you're right in doing this. If you have a specific goal in mind right now, you have more time to work towards it. Too many people put this off till too late, and then find that the course they wanna take up requires better results than they have scored.

If you wanna study journalism, keep improving on your language, speaking and writing skills. Regular reading up of current affairs won't hurt either.

That said, as the years go along you may find yourself interested in an entirely new field, so it is also advisable to keep your options open.

PS. I planned on being a journalist when I was 12 too. I'm 18 now and studying journalism. Good luck.

It's great to be aware of college and the many factors involved (admissions, housing, GPA, student life, rankings, reputation etc etc). It's also good to be aware of your interests, do well in high school classes and get involved. Work experience can help you to begin a resume and save some money for college expenses.

Probably the most important thing you can do at this point is prepare to take AP and honors courses in your high school. Also, you might like to research the ACT/SAT tests. Taking these your junior year (or even earlier) will be your first real gauge of which college you could get into.

But, you really shouldn't make any definite plans yet. It's good to be something of an overachiever in high school but without ACT/SAT test results, you really don't have any objective standard of knowledge.

*Personally, I was somewhat suprised when I got a 26 (a solid score) on the ACT my first try. I never put much effort into high school but still scored well. Similarly, those who put in a lot of effort at high school could score suprisingly low on the ACT. A lot really depends on these tests.

Not too young at all. I'd say you're ahead of the curve.

The most important thing to consider is what do you want to do professionally?
Also, once you figure that out, would college be the right choice, or would a trade/vocational school be better?
How about the military? There are tremendous opportunities for education and training through the military, plus the satisfaction of serving your country.

Way to be thinking about your future...good job!

it's never too young! i know many people who know what their dream college and job is from when they were very young. just go to the website of the college you like and read about it some more. but keep in mind that by the time you actually reach college, many things will have changed so keep your options open.

and might i add, you have great spelling for a 12 year old. i see many adults who can't spell half as well as you. good for you!

No, its never too young.
You are on the right track, select one of them and research the courses they offer and which you are interested in. Then research others and see who can provide a better education in the field you willl take.
Choose the one best for you and strive to get in.

It's never too early or late to start thinking about where you want to go to college.
