Even though India's preamble to its constitution is not actually part of its constitution, it states India's type of government is:
"WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizens:...."
In actuality, India's government is a Republic with a constitution being the supreme law of the land.

Japans has a constitutionally-limited monarchy. The Japanese do elect their own representatives. overeignty, which was previously embodied in the Emperor, is now the domain of the people. The Emperor is defined as the symbol of the state. Their government is much like England's or the USA, but different in many ways. I would describe it as a democracy.
