Ok Al bundy has my vote for his intelligence about metaphors. But I like being silly....and who the hell would put a damn cake out in the rain? She deserves a heartbreak if you ask me! Maybe she was a fool who wore her heart on her sleeve too!!

The writer of the song, his last name is Webb I forget his first name, meet his girl friend in McArthur Park everyday. He thought she was his sole mate, his one true love, he though he had a wonderful relationship that had evolved over time. One day he met her in the park and she told him it was over and his eyes teared up. "McArthur Park was melting in the rain". The reference to never having the recipe again was to the relationship, he would never find someone again like her.

think it's about a love found and then lost

I mean....if you listen to the "cake left out in the rain and never find that recipe again" metaphor, doesn't take a PH.D in psychology to guess someone got dumped royally and what better way to explain it than thru rising dough that's been suddenly flattened & left to melt in the pouring rain

"I don't think I can make it, cuz it took so long to bake it...."
