The phases the Moon goes through are caused by two things: 1) the Moon revolving around the Earth, and 2) the Moon reflecting sunlight towards the Earth. Half of the Moon is always lit, not just the portion we see: however, sometimes we only see a profile of the lit portion of the Moon. Certain phases of the Moon result depending on its orbit, and the Moon's orbit is responsible for the phase changes we see.

Tim C gave a good answer but a picture is worth a thousand words. Check out the animated graphics on this website to get a good understanding of how and why lunar phases occur ==>http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/projects/data/MoonPhases/index.html

The moon always gets one half of its side illuminated by Sun. The Moon keeps orbiting around Earth and Earth orbits around Sun at their own speeds. Hence we see on full-moon day fully illuminated half and see nothing of illuminated portion on new moon day. In between days a portion of illuminated half is visible to us. In these days we see moon as crescent or / gibbous. It is interesting to see moon just few days after the new moon days. In these days we can notice small portion in bright crescent shape and remaining Moon in dull colour. This dull illumination is by the reflected Sunlight from Earth! On later days reflected Sunlight does not fall on the Moon.
