A buddy of mine told me Stanley Kubrick directed the moon landing for NASA in exchange for a custom made lense to film in low-light conditions for his 1970s film BARRY LYNDON. Is this true, or is my buddy a dumb poop?

Well like most legends at least part of it is true Stanley Kubrick did make a special camera for shooting Barry Lyndon. There were only five of them in existance and he had them fitted with a lense designed to track orcital movement in space creating a flattening of the scene like no other camera can do. But No, he did not direct the landing on the moon footage.
