A lot depends on your friends name. Trying to search for something extremely common like "John Smith" or "Peter Jones" would be almost impossible, whereas if he was "Ebeneezer Twazzock" he'd be quite easy to find.

Best place in the first instance is probably friendsreunited.co.uk. If you have no joy there then it might be worth buying a few credits at www.192.com and searching the UK electoral roll or phone book, but like I said above, you'll get hundreds, if not thousands of hits for common names like Smith, Taylor, Jones, etc - and there is always the possibility that they may have opted out of the searchable online electoral roll for privacy purposes and not everyone is in the phone book either.

Organisations like the Salvation Army offer people tracing services, but I'm sure this is for family only and not long-lost friends. Other avenues worth considering are special columns in the letters page of the newspapers in a 'trying to find' section. I know "The Sun" has one, and is the biggest national UK paper of all circulation wise, but it is also worthwhile googling a small local newspaper in the area your friend lived or you think they might live and place a letter there too in an appeal for help and hope that someone might recognise who you are describing.

That is all you will need if you know what town he lived in 12 years ago. All Courthouses keep records. Newspapers do to. You might find him through his Father's name. There is always a way if there is a will to do it. Good Luck !!
