Honestly, it's not really what you say it's more of what you do. Sure you can say I love you till your blue in the face, but if the guy truly loves you he can tell when you mean it. The timing needs to be right if you say "I love you," say it after he tries to do something nice and make it seem like it was blurted out and you couldn't help yourself. A random kiss and hug is also a great thing. I like to be surprised and I love it when my girlfriend seems to just smile around me and you can tell she's happy to be with you.
My only problem is sometimes pet names can be cute but around friends it's an opening for embarrassment so try not to let them slip out when around his friends.
