In Pan's Labrynth - how did they do the scene where the general sews his cheek back together?

What special effects did they use? Any makeup? CG effects?

It looked so real when he did it in the movie! I really want to know!

I would say CG and makeup combined.Certain takes would be make up and well maybe even some of the green screen.Like for some movies they would put some patch of green screen material so they can get the effect they want....

I would go with CG, its amazing these days. They do entire movies in vivid animation.
