We didn't and I kind of worry about that. It was really pushed at the hospital and via mail when I was pregnant and we opted out because it is very, very expensive. Did anyone spend the money and bank the cord blood. Have you ever used it?

I didn't - it was far too expensive for starters. Beyond that, I know enough about tissue storage, stem cell preservation, and such to know that any company claiming to be able to preserve cord blood for more than ten years is BSing you.

Something to be aware of: Stem cells (the important cells in cord blood) are fussy, finnicky, tempramental little things.

In a recent Q about cord blood banking, the question poser made a comment about 'nobody knows how long stem cells can be stored' - and that's true. We don't know what the maximum time is. But we do have a good idea about how viable cells are after a decade in the freezer (not very!).

To add to my doubts about cord blood banking, what kind fo guarantee do these companies give you? No, I don't mean a guarantee that you'll need the cells, or that should you need them they'll cure whatever horrible disease it is. I mean guarantee that the cells will be viable even four years from now. One thawing - not even a thaw, we're talking to minus sixty Celcius, still awfully cold - and they're useless. That's far less than a day without power. What kind of power backups do they have? Lease where they are so they won't have to up and move? Things like that don't seem to be mentioned.

Okay, enough of my ranting. Bottom line is this. In my opinion these companies are preying on the fears of new parents, and on the guilt of percieved missed opportunity with massive consequences.

In the end, you made your decision. You've got so many other things to worry about - this isn't something you can do anything about. Take a deep breath, relax, let this worry go.

We didn't. Honestly, I do not think it is something a parent should be asked to pay for. Parents spend enough money on health insurance. If banking a baby's cord blood is so potentially beneficial later on, why don't health insurance companies invest in their customers a little and pay for the cord blood banking themselves?

sure, we banked the twine blood from the two one in all our young infants besides the actuality that the outcomes are no longer yet shown to the viabilty long term of the blood, we felt like it replaced right into a protection blanket in a manner. yet sure that's costly, we paid 500 start up, 80 a month (2 charge mixed) we is merely no longer banking our 3td infants because of the actuality we've adequate banket with the two, we can be donating our new infants twine blood they %. it up from the medical institution, the stem cells would be bumped off & utilized in reserach for parkinsins ailment,

Neither I or any of my friends have done this when we have had our children, and none of us regret not doing it. Don't worry, our parents never had the option to bank our blood, and they never looked back and wished that they were able to..

No, I allow the cord to remain attached until it stops pulsing.

Yes, we banked.

No, we haven't used it, but it is there if we ever need to. We were lucky in the fact we had the extra money to bank it.

I would feel awful if my son needed it, and we didn't bank AND had the money to do it.

I have never found anyone who has done this. Obviously someone should tell them if they spent less on advertising perhaps more people could afford to do it.
