I have noticed that some spring training games are listed as "split squad". What does that mean?

Simple answer...a baseball team divided into two squads to play two games at the same time. Good way to get more players on the field so managers can evaluate their skills and fitness level during spring training.

In the offseason, ML teams have a 40 man major league roster. These 40 players plus several top prospects and veteran non-roster invitees come to training camp each spring. In order to see as many as possible under game conditions, the camp is split into 2 squads which can each play a game on the same day. One squad goes on the road to another ball park and one stays home.

This also has the added benefit of selling more tickets.

In spring training they literally split the squad and take half the team to an away game and keep half the team at home so they can get everyone some playtime.

A Split Squad or "SS" next to the team name only happens during Spring Training to get players more live playing time. Half of the team goes to one city while the other half plays in another location. This helps the managers and coaches see how the players react to playing longer games.

This is especially helpful if a player that is in limbo gets more of an opportunity to show his stuff.

its only used in spring training games, its cause they carry a lot more players in the spring they dont all get as many chances to get in the games, so they take there for sure guys who are gonna be on the mlb roster, throw in a couple hot prospects, and then shuffle in everyone else, and so basically they split the team into two smaller teams, so that everyone gets a chance to play...the part that sux is if u go all the way down to arizona to watch the mariners, it could end up where u dont see ichiro play cause he's on the split squad that travels and ****...

What it means is that a MLB team splits it's squad in half and plays 2 teams in different venues on the same day. See below for a recent example.

Split Squad is splitting the team in half for two games or 4.5 innings a game. This type of play let's each team figure out which combination of fielders is the best... it helps with cuts. I don't know if each combination is the same, but I guess they change it all the time.

they split the roster up to play separate teams on the same day. They've got so many more playing on their spring training roster that they can afford to do that. Also helps see more of the young guys play and judge their talents. Gets them more playing time.

That means that two games will be played on the same day, at the same time for one team (ex. NY Mets) and the team is divided to play in two games at the same time. For example, the NY Mets will play one game with made up of mostly starters and then at the same time will play another game with a team made up of mostly non-starters
