These are the main properties of water.

A. Water is polar.
--This gives water surface tension.
--This also gives water capillary action.
--Polarity helps water to dissolve polar molecules.

B. Water resists temperature change.
--Organisms are mostly water, so their bodies don't change temperature as quickly as they would otherwise.
--Organisms that live in aquatic environments don't have to deal with large changes in environmental temperatures.

C. Water expands when it freezes.
--This expansion breaks rocks into soil.
--Water forms on the TOPS of lakes and other bodies of water, leaving a more moderate environment beneath.
--Frozen cells may die.
