Redneck is a labelling of ones of standards in ones eye's. Not all there upstairs, sorta like Jethro off the Beverly Hillbillies. Or you being from Australia maybe Crocodile Dunnee type.
As for where it originated? You got me!
PS. Kate: Yahoo Answers said this :
In it's original context, it was used to describe hard working people who worked outdoors and in the fields...... farmers, mainly.
It meant an honest dedicated worker who put in so many hours working in the sun that the back of his neck turned red from sunburn. It was a thing to be proud of.

I'm not sure if there are really that many rednecks left in America. Rednecks used to be poor, uneducated people that worked with their hands, but most people in America work in service jobs now. I think a lot of white farmers living in the South often referred to themselves as rednecks because their necks became sunburned and turned red while they were working outside. The term "redneck" began to take on a new meaning after a while. Rednecks were simply known as bums. Most of them are unemployed. A lot of them smoke and drink. Rednecks are unemployed people that live in trailers. Watch COPS reality television sometime. You will often see rednecks on that show. Many of them have deep southern accents, and you really have to ask yourself whether or not some of them completed more than five years of school. To call a white person a redneck is basically the same as calling a black person the N word.

Redneck is... Stubborn? Yes. Proud? Yes. Willing to fight for what they believe in, even when the odds are against them? Yes. Willing to work for what they want? Yes. These are characteristics of all Rednecks, regardless of where they live. They are a little different. You can always tell a Redneck - he's the one that winds up being the butt of the jokes, but doesn't really care. He's the guy that everybody knows, but not real good. He's the guy who stays to himself most of the time, but is always there if you need a hand (but never asks for help himself). We come from everywhere now, the South, the North, the Midwest, and the West Coast. There's even some Rednecks overseas. Look around real close - one of us might be living next door!
