Because i once read about this serial killer who said he has been fantasizing about killing women since he was seven years old i say its a mental thing but a friend of mine blames the parents and the media for kids who turn out wrong.

there really isn't any pat answer for your question. There have been several studies done , on the serial killer brain. They believe their brain is very different from a normal brain and the part of the brain that is affected in most SK"S brains are the part we use for making decisions and self control. It can also be the way they were treated as children, the abuse they suffered or kicked out at an early age and left to fend on their own, and also because of the abuse they want to hurt things and people and that's why they choose people weaker and animals

Well, I think all kids have thoughts about hurting someone, whether it's the bully who stole your toys or even your parent who didn't let you have a bike for your birthday. However, most of us know the difference between reality and fantasy, have a sense of morals, and realize the implications of those actions. Our Superego gets checked and people around us tell us that it's not the best course of action.

I believe it's both a mental thing, as well as a environment/nurture thing. A lot of serial killers don't have normal childhoods, either being ignored or abused. As for the media, I think it's a small factor, but not exclusively. Serial killers have been around before TV and videogames, we just hear more about it now.

Robert Ressler, former FBI Agent who coined the term "serial killer" and one of the co-founders of it's infamous Behavioural Sciences Unit; suggested that "the aberrant behaviour of killers is in some ways only an extension of normal behaviour", taking young males for example, boys going through puberty may fantasize about kissing a girl, maybe taking her to movie or something. There are various, socio-economic, psychological and sociological factors involved, but as an example of one reason as to why some people have "serial killer thinking" so early on is that those boys who don't have the self-esteem, or the confidence to actually act out those kinds fantasies of kissing a girl, etc, divulge themselves in angry thoughts, at themselves, at others, and their fantasies follow that anger and turn those previously normal fantasies into a warped version of themselves, eventually the boy starts fantasizing about things such as "what her head would look like on a stick"...

From what I've seen on serial killer research, there is only one distinction between serial killers and 'normal' people. They apparently have a disorder that doesn't allow them to perceive emotions from other people correctly. They act on their fantasies once comfortable, and believe that they are doing no wrong to the other person, even though they do know they're doing wrong by society's standards. They come from all walks of life and all backgrounds, and though tend to be male, there are many women out there killing serially as well.
That's my two cents for ya.

The serial killers who kill women were usually abused by some woman in their youth. This would lead to a mental disorder. I don't believe that children who have not been abused in any way would become serial killers from the media, video games, or movies.

Recent reports in science have found discrete locations in the brain that are used in intricate systems that serve as the human moral compass (1).Changes in the brain have long been known to change the behaviors of a man. In the famous example of Phineas Gage, an accident at his job caused an iron rod to pierce through Gage's skull. Gage was able to stand and speak a few moments later. His intelligence was intact, but it soon became clear that this once model young man had been changed by the incident. He now cursed, lied and behaved horribly to people around them. Gage's doctor, John Harlow, said that Gage was no longer Gage, and that the balance "between his intellectual faculty and his animal propensities" had been destroyed. Can this example of brain-injury be used to explain the 'animal propensities' of serial killers?
It's still being debated! See www.serendip.brynmawr.edu/bb--Lot's on the subject.

you can't blame parent's for everything that their kids do. you could have the most perfect parent's in the world, and their kids may still end up killing someone, raping someone, hurting themselves, etc... is some people's cases it could be the parents. but then it could also be people in school, whoever they meet at the streets, bullying, etc... i happen to agree with you though. serial killers and child molesters and things of that nature is a mental problem and need psychiatric help!

Read the book, "A Child Called It," and then let me know what you think. I've seen some pretty messed up kids (and I mean under the age of 4) in my profession. It's amazing how some of them have even survived. Although I do think a very small percentage are just wired wrong.

it's not always the violence kids see on tv. violent behavior can also come from not enough love by parents at an early age. feelings of being ignored by parents. it's not just what kids see on tv there can be a lot of reasons. but i know for sure the way parents raise their children has a big effect on this question.
