As part of my theatre degree course work, we had to take 3 different Theatre History courses. The final class discussed theatre of different cultures. There is only one Mexican playwright that I can recall (but it does not mean there is only one).

Rodolfo Usigli was born in 1905 and died in 1979. He was called the "Playwright of the Mexican Revolution". He studied drama at Yale University on a Rockefeller scholarship.

Usigli believed the objective of theatre was to tell the truth about society. He was known for his strong representation of women in plays.

His 1938 play "El gesticulador" was censored by the Mexican government for political reasons. It is the only play know to have been censored for that reason.
