I've been playing for six years now and my tone has gradually gotten better. When I practice, I try playing songs with a james galway cd (for example i'll play along with galway's arrangement of 'Beauty and th Beast'). But I notice that my tone is what i think of as too pure as compared to sir galway and other flute players as well. When i listen to them, especially sir galway, they have this particular medium between focused/pure tone and a slight hint of airyness. If you listen to one of galway's slow ballads and pay attnetion to his tone, you should be able to recognize what i mean. I want to know how i can achieve this beatiful medium between a pure tone and a slightly airy tone.

you should record yourself playing. play airy, play focused, then play and make a sound in between the two. from there add more air if you don't like the tone or add less air. find the tone you like the best.
