I am going to be taking a year off from schooling and want to get involved with humanitarian aid. Is there an organization that takes volunteers? I would like to help. How? I was thinking areas like Darfur need it badly...i do understand how dangerous the country is right now but there must be some need for help with refugee camps that are set up in Chad, right? or is there just nothing i can do but give money? thanks

You need to do some research.

Start by finding out what groups are out there... like The International Red Cross, the American Red Cross, the Peace Corps, Sierra Club, several countries have what is called AID... there is USAID, etc...

Then research each one to find the one that fits what you have in mind the best. I'd go ahead and talk to them. You could email, write or call...

depending which country you live in, there are a number of programs for people like you who want to volunteer. Youth ambassadors, USAid, non-government organisations, red cross, CARE, oxfam, look them up locally. I can help you with australian resources but my guess is you are not from Aust. Go to www.usaid.gov if you are from the US and look at the volunteer partners, some down bottom of page.

I volunteered in Papua New Guinea with a good NGO (get someone who knows to recommend reputable groups once you know which country you want to go to), and it opened so many doors. I ended up working with a couple of UN programmes and i learnt so much. I now have a job with Australia's version of USAID. But a few things to think about - will you be safe? can you afford to eat? is there a structured program available with support? do you have language skills? do you have training in any areas, such as nursing?
Although you mean well, there is an abundance of well meaning people, and a shortage of skilled personnel. You may be more hindrance than help in some cases, and most grass roots organisations will not have the resources to keep you safe, fed, and supervised in many places. try volunteering for an active organisation in your own country to get a feel for the environment in which groups work in, the priorities, the methods, the resources, the goals, and you may be able to go o'seas in a real supporting role.

email me if you have any more questions.

Go to the website of the UN and join a credible organization involved in giving aid to complement your good intention of giving aid particularly in Darfur..
