Lichens aren't too picky about having soil or most of the usual amenities, but they do not do well in the presence of air pollution. In fact, lichens have been used fairly extensively as indicators of the amount of air pollution in an area.

Lichens do need
--some sort of substrate on which to grow
--a minimal amount of light for photosynthesis
--moisture
