I think what really is confusing is the world "multiply". We won't be having these arguments if we change this word. Most people think that this word equates with quantity, but it is really not.

Therefore, in "multiplication process" it doesn't mean that the answer will always be a larger number.

multiplying 1/2 by 1/2 is like saying you are looking for 1/2 of 1/2 , and half of a half is a quarter. the answer to any number multiplied by a number between 1 and 0 will be smaller than the original number because it is a percentage of the original number

Your question makes very little sense gramatically. Multiplying 1/2 times 1/2 is saying that you are taking half of a half. If you have have half a dollar (.50), and I take half of your half a dollar what are you left with? A quarter (.25).

.5 x .5 = .25

when you multiply by a fraction you are actually cutting the number.

for example take an apple and multiply it by 1/2
what you are doing is multiplying by the top number (1) then dividing by the bottom number (2). you end up with half an apple.

since you are multiplying by a number lower than one you are actually dividing.

hope I haven't confused you.

Any time you multiply something by 1/2 (0.5) your answer will be half of the first number.

eg. 4 x 0.5 = 2
so
1/2 (0.5) x 1/2 (0.5) = 1/4 (0.25)
