Executive--- ex. has to get congressional approval before going to war
Legislative-- ex. the executive branch can veto or sign a bill into law (which the congress has passed)
Judicial--- ex. (the hardest to check)usually have to ammend the constitution to overturn a ruling. (done by 3/4 maj. of both houses)

I think, it's been awhile since I took government.

Action: Congress passes laws.

Judicial Check: The Courts can determine if those laws are valid under the constitution.

Executive Check: The President can veto the law, asking Congress if they're really sure....

Other examples exist. Such as the fact that Congress controls the money, so puts limitations on Executive branch action; and Congress can pass new laws, which constrain what the Courts can do (other that constitutional issues).
