The Russian Revolution happenend overnight as the country got tired of Russian losses against Germany during the First World War, long bread ques, rumours about the Empress Alexandra and Rasputin being lovers, the Tsar Nicholas II being an incompetent leader.

But the seeds of the Russian Revolution go much deeper than that. The whole autocratic system of government was to blame. The 1861 Emancipation of the Serfs did not result in freedom - they were still tied to the village, and could not leave without approval. Opportunities to buy the land and work it were unrealistic.

Famines and poor harvests and bad conditions forced many off the farms to flee to the burgenoning cities and mines to work in the factories. However factory managers themselves were unscrupulous forcing workers to do long hours and for little pay and bad working conditions. In protest, General strikes were organised bringing the country to a stand still.

The failure of the 1905 Revolution to give power to the newly elected Dumas did not give the middle class, shop keepers etc any say in government. The Tsar and the nobility still held the reins of power.

The use of the army and the secret police to quell dissent finally destroyed the image of the Tsar as the father of his people. The use of the army in the 1905 Revolution earned the tsar the nickname 'Bloody Nicholas'.

All of this came to a head in March 1917.

The Tsarist regime didn't so much collapse as it was overthrown in a revolution by the Mensheviks, in turn overthrown again ten months later by the Bolsheviks, headed by Lenin. The reason why the Tsar's government was overthrown was due to several reasons, one of which being that the Russian royal family was living in incredible luxury while much of the population starved. In addition to this, the entrance into World War I was not incredibly popular, and the Russian army suffered incredible casualties, and the use of a major chunk of Russia's resources at the time, ie food, money, other natural and manufactured goods, led to shortages. The socialists' capitaized on the opportunity to remove the royal family and put power into the hands of the socialist party and a Provisional government in February 1917, in turn overthrown again in October of 1917. (Red October.) It was then that the Russian Empire ceased and the Soviet Union began.
