Some of them appear to have their own definition of the word, which doesn't seem to bear any resemblance to any dictionary definition, or to what people self-identify who say that are liberals.

It's not all conservatives, just a few irrational ones. But, if those want to make up their own definition of the word, thus rendering their statements either tautological or meaningless to anyone but them, why stop them.

They're all ideologies that declare themselves each other's enemy. Ironically enough, classic liberalism relates more to the conservative's ideology (not neoCons) in the way they support smaller, less intrusive government (the main difference being is that conservatives have a emphasis on family and values-something that shouldn't be controlled by the government) , while Liberals now believe in more governmental social control, believing they will better the country, mainly enlarged during the depression by FDR, Democrat. The strangest thing is that the founders of the Constitution and this government would roll in their graves if they saw what both parties have become.
Both ideologies don't honor the Constitution, and while they don't understand each other, both are so politically motivated that they really end up looking the same. Whether you agree or not, the government was greatly enlarged by Lincoln by the republicans, and enlarged even more by FDR. Both parties are in the wrong, and it's this opposition (the parties divided by the branches in the government) that at least help slow this enlargement.
The problem also is all the deals that take place, both by congress and the president. This idea of "If you scratch my back..." is completely wrong- yes you must work together, but would you really want a single party running the show?
As a short answer to your question though, I seriously doubt the intelligence of my fellow Americans. This tunnel vision of politics and personal views conflict so much that I honestly fear for the future of my once beautiful country (don't misinterpret what I'm saying, I love it, but we're certainlty going downhill).

Most don't seem to have a clue, at least not on this forum, but rubenedictarnold, gave the best answer I have ever seen from a conservative. If all conservatives though like him, maybe Liberals and Conservatives could actually learn to find some common ground, and stand together to defeat a common enemy, and save ourselves from the tyranny that some want to inflict on us! *sm*

Any conservatives?

Yes, there are conservatives who know what liberals are.

Some of them even answer questions on this site.

Unfortunately, most conservatives on this site (and who scream loudest over the airwaves and in print), just like to spew sludge.

But you shouldn't paint all conservatives with the same brush.

Don't give them ammo by playing by the rules of the most hate-filled and ignorant of their side.

Do liberals have a clue what a conservative should be? Now days with liberal conservatives, and conservative liberals, who knows?

Real conservatives recognize that liberal and conservative are the ying and yang of American politics. One is lost without the other. But these new Bush conservatives believe that anyone who opposes the corruption and incompetence of the Bush administration has to be a liberal. These people are truly a threat to this country. And by the will of our forefathers, they will be enlightened, or thrown into the trash heap of history.

Gee, no, honey - we're all inbred, hillbilly, war-mongering, ignorant, trailer-trash rednecks.

Yes, Virginia, most conservatives have a brain.

I not only know what a liberal is, I have several very good friends who are liberals. We even - gasp! - have a lot of respect for each others views. Why? Because, unlike far too many of the drooling morons you see on YA, we can actually back up our positions.

Liberal in the dictionary and liberal in the social political sense is not the same thing.

Just as with conservatives, there are a wide variety of people and their beliefs when it comes to liberals im sure.

But one thing you will find thats common.
Belief that the governments job is to provide for people.

And on that basic tenant alone there is a flaw.

so called liberals and so called conservatives (especially in the American system) are so close together in the political spectrum that they are virtually indistinguishable.

They both seek to become an elite ruling class. What differs is their methods in achieving that goal.

Liberals use scare tactics and social programs to become enlightened rulers. Conservatives use monopolistic business practices.

No difference.

No, they do not realize that even with their extreme religious
& extreme 'moral' convictions, we accept most of humanity,
regardless of beliefs.
It seems like their agenda is to establish a class system
according to belief & wealth. A little disturbing since we're
all sharing the same planet.
